"It started has a hobby that soon developed into conceptualised way of approaching new things." explains photographer Jorge Serra in an email to us before we interviewed him. "I started with film cameras, disposable and what was around. Then moved into digital with a point and shoot, bridge cameras and then moved up to M4/3." Now, Jorge shoots Sony, with only prime lenses. But of course, gear isn't everything and you can see in his images. Jorge is a genuine creative that finds ways to tell stories in a single frame. For this project, he explained that part of the creative process was working with City Number Nine--who he is good friends with. And so the comfort they had with each other helped things just flow.

No More Lithium-Ion Batteries in Passenger Plane Cargo Holds
The United States of America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just banned lithium-ion batteries in the cargo holds of passenger flights.
For those of us in the photography world, that means you’re gonna need to lug around all of those batteries as checked in luggage. Sounds fun, of course, but this restriction was long in the making.

Citing safety concerns, the FAA and US Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao called on stronger restrictions following 2018 guidance that “suggested” that lithium-ion batteries be stored as carry-on luggage rather than in the plane’s cargo hold.
Referencing the relevant passage, PetaPixel writes: “Devices containing lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries, including – but not limited to – smartphones, tablets, and laptops, should be kept in carry-on baggage. If these devices are packed in checked baggage, they should be turned completely off, protected from accidental activation and packed so they are protected from damage.”
There are also some changes coming to how lithium-ion batteries are shipped in cargo planes. From now on they can only have a 30% charge. Again, safety was the main consideration in making these rules.
In rare instances, lithium-ion batteries can explode and case a fire. That’d be a tough situation to deal with way up in the sky and, if the explosion were large enough, it’s really bad news.
You may recall Samsung’s issue with batteries some years back. As one of the more prominent examples of what could wrong, that also serves as a reminder of just how rare that kind of thing is.
Of course, it’s not hard to see why this is going to be a pain for a lot of passengers. Most modern electronic equipment is powered by a lithium-ion battery, and photography equipment can use some especially hefty batteries.
Traveling by air was already miserable enough, but it’s about to get a whole lot harder for photographers flying in the United States.

US Bans Lithium-Ion Batteries in Cargo of Passenger Flights
The United States has officially banned lithium-ion batteries from being transported in the cargo holds of passenger planes. If you travel with camera gear, you’ll need to bring all your lithium-ion batteries into the cabin in a carry-on bag.
The major new rule was announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao and the FAA “to strengthen safety provisions.”
The FAA’s 2018 fact sheet about lithium-ion batteries didn’t ban them completely from cargo holds:
Devices containing lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries, including – but not limited to – smartphones, tablets, and laptops, should be kept in carry-on baggage. If these devices are packed in checked baggage, they should be turned completely off, protected from accidental activation and packed so they are protected from damage.
In addition to prohibiting the transport of lithium ion cells or batteries as cargo on passenger aircraft, the Interim Final Rule (IFR) also requires that lithium-ion cells and batteries shipped on cargo planes to not have more than 30% charge.
“This rule will strengthen safety for the traveling public by addressing the unique challenges lithium batteries pose in transportation,” says Chao.
The FAA published a warning against storing spare lithium ion batteries in checked bags back in 2015, and the US began urging airlines to ban cameras and other large electronics in checked bags in 2017.
The main concern is that lithium ion batteries can (in rare cases) catch fire and explode.
TechCrunch notes that the UN International Civil Aviation Authority already implemented the same restriction for member countries back in 2016, so the US regulation is codifying the guidance that has already been in place.
