It’s almost impossible to do anything on the Internet without stirring some sort of controversy. And, when it comes to photography, rights issues tends to be a particularly divisive subject.
The annual Shot on iPhone contest sponsored by Apple tends to avoid scandal.

This year’s contest was a little bit different than those in the past.
But, after settling a rights issue for contest winners, Apple went ahead with the contest and unveiled the winners today.
Of course, this being the Internet, the reaction was mixed to “meh,” which is interesting given how many emotions the contest sparked just a few weeks ago.
Hosted to show off the iPhone’s camera capabilities, the Shot on iPhone contest typically fronts beautiful, though often anodyne, images.
Nonetheless, this year’s winners were an awesome combination of color, composition, and budding talent. It’s pretty amazing that this is what smartphone cameras are capable of doing and that was probably the whole point of the contest anyway.
The photographs were judged by a panel of industry experts and the contest winners represent the four corners of the globe. Per a report in PetaPixel, the 10 winners are: “Pete Souza, Austin Mann, Annet de Graaf, Luísa Dörr, Chen Man, Phil Schiller, Kaiann Drance, Brooks Kraft, Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Jon McCormack and Arem Duplessis.”

The winners will have their photos featured in Apple advertising material in the future. This includes everything from huge billboards to print ads and other media.
That’s a heady slice of a exposure for any photographer. As to whether or not Apple will hold the contest next year, there’s no word out there yet but it’s more than likely.
